“Why do you love fantasy?”

Gates of Sudanta

Every genre of book has its own intrigue, but none captures our interest quite like fantasy. It’s been our favorite choice for reading, games, and movies since we were kids. Naturally it became our favorite to write as well.

For me, the sheer possibility in the fantasy genre is freeing for a writer. My imagination can conjure up whatever it wants and there’s no limit. When you have to invent a world and all the inhabitants and rules, you have to challenge yourself to use creative problem-solving for everything from how does the magic work to what sort of economy are the characters operating in? (One of those is more fun than the other . . . )

That wide, blank canvas is Duncan’s favorite part of fantasy as well. World-building is the core part of the genre, and there’s nothing he enjoys more than inventing worlds, cultures, and magic systems. But that’s not all.

“The farther from reality it is, the more I’m interested in it,” he says. “I’m surrounded by modern life 24/7. I want something new. Novelty.”

And if that’s not enough, fantasy books can have dragons. How can you not love this genre?

What do you like about the fantasy genre? Tell us in the comments!
